Greek dinner with ’09 Frog’s Tooth Pinot Grigio

I just got back from Greece so I’ve been missing my favorite Greek foods.   I ended this last day of 4 weeks vacation with Spanakopita and Pork Gyros.   I’m preparing the Gyros (year-os) like the way they were made in the Peloponnese.   Flat break filled with pork, tomatoes, red onion, Greek yoghurt w/cucumber shavings and the twist a few patate as well inside.  I’ve chosen a nice ’09 Pinot Grigio from Frog’s Tooth Winery, Calaveras County, CA.    It has a crystal clear pale golden color that almost sparkles like champagne.   It looks expensive but at $16.00 a bottle it’s a great find.   When you taste it you quickly get a very smooth “coat your mouth” feeling that makes you take notice.     The warmth comes from the vanilla & honey, the crispness from the lime and white pepper flavors .   It’s like a fusion of tastes with not one in particular taking control of the experience.   Larry and Gary, the two owners of Frog’s Tooth Winery are some of the nicest people you could meet.   They shared the story of how they got the name of their winery with me.   Gary was fascinated by frogs as a child, even getting teased at times for naming them.   So when they decided on a winery much later in life, Frog Tooth Winery was born.    You can find this Pinot Grigio as well some other great wines they have (more blogging on them later) at www.frogstooth.com
